INDEPENDECE DAY
INDEPENDENCE DAY 2011
This year Americans are celebrating 235 years of freedom. A good question to ask you and your friends will be: from whom? I ask different kids every year, and here are some very common answers: from Indians, from Europe, from Mexico, from slavery. It is from England.
Since those memorable days in July 1776 our country grew and developed with cosmic speed. Courage and the will of strong and smart men and women transformed this country of prairies, deserts and forests into a leader in quality of life, technology, and, at least until the Patriot Act, freedom. Our cities are modern and unique: New York, San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas, and the list goes on. We created Hollywood - the worlds biggest brain-washing machine. And all that in such a short time! (Did you know that by the time of the American Revolution the average height of an American of English descent was a full inch taller than his British counterpart!) What happens when a kid grows up too fast? He has growing pains. And we do. As a country, we have our fair share of pain and frustration. But it seems like one day a year our melting pot comes together and simply enjoys the fireworks. Just as our forefathers wanted it!
Here is the letter that John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL
Nature in the United States is unique in every
state. Our family is on our annual road trip, and we learn something new about our country every day. Tomorrow we are heading to the largest dinosaur museum in the world. It's located in Thanksgiving Point, Utah. Wyoming happens to be the capital of the world for fish fossils. Who knew? My friends are going to Kentucky, where they will attend The Great Lebowski festival. I've heard so many fun stories about state fairs (it's on my list before I die). Last year we went to see Yellowstone (everyone should see it before it blows up, being the largest caldera in the world (that is my dark humor)). The list is endless. The only way to find out is to go see America for yourself!

FIREWORKS SAFETY
every year a lot of kids are injured due to the
